Studying at LMU: Information for refugees and asylum-seekers

Depending on their level of qualification, several options are available to refugees and asylum-seekers who want to take up a course of study at LMU or are preparing to do so in the near future:

LMU Preparatory Program for Refugees

Immediate enrolment as a full-time university student may not always be possible or desirable – if one’s knowledge of German is inadequate, for example. To cater for such cases, LMU has set up a preparatory program designed specifically for refugees (residence for temporary protection) and asylum-seekers who have previously attended university elsewhere and wish to study at LMU.

The program provides for:

  • Orientation interview with a guidance counselor at the International Office, which enables refugees and asylum-seekers who have prior experience of third-level education or have fulfilled the matriculation requirements of their home countries to explore the options available
  • Participation in free German classes organized by Deutschkurse bei der Universität München and attendance at selected lecture courses
  • Temporary registration (for up to 1 year) in the context of the program
  • Certificate confirming participation in LMU’s Preparatory Program for Refugees (which enables candidates who successfully complete the program and meet all other necessary requirements to take up a full-time course of study at LMU)

This project is part of the study preparation module in the program "FIT - Promoting Academic Success and Labour Market Integration of International Talents" and is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
